18Th of February every year is one of my most personal days. How do I explain this? Imagine breaking up with someone you truly love.... Imagine if someone you love tells you they have to go and will never be in touch .....The number you used to get them on speed dial now rings 'this number does not exist please check and try again' ppppfff.... disappears into thin air!!!
Imagine all the dreams you had and your plans together, .....All gone in an instant! Everything changes.
Those are the feelings this day brings. That's how it feels when you lose a loved one...The only difference is, with a breakup - the famous saying 'where there is life there is hope' - you might one day cross paths and have a reconciliation or at least get an explanation..With mine, my questions will never be answered - as mine's gone to a place where only Angels live. When you go, you never will return.
So what is it with 'WHITE'?
Is it angels??? For me, every memory is stored with a dress. I remember my guest with the dress. What does this say about what you wear..Think again!! Because you will be remembered by it. White was the colour chosen to be worn to celebrate the life, or rather the passing on of my dad to a higher place (our belief). I thought we were meant to mourn and wear black! As far as I was concerned, I was mourning!
Oh well, it was a white scenery, almost everyone was dressed in white. I had never seen so much white in my life...to say the least, it was truly relaxing.
Talking about colour and the subconscious messages you transmit to the people you meet; white for us meant happiness and celebration...in as much as white to the Chinese - is the traditional colour for mourning. White is mostly associated with purity and innocence, thus symbolic for brides and angels. Doctors and nurses wear white to signify sterility. Some people wear white to be looked upon as open and trustworthy. White can also be seen as a colour of resignation or a symbol of surrender, normally a white flag is often raised as a token of peaceful intentions. White is also regarded as light and normally associated with summer. It's true that while white is mostly associated with positives, be cautious in wearing white to appear pure and innocent - as to some, you might appear deceitful.
Some might argue white isn't a colour, but the colourist theory from the time of Sir Isaac Newton suggested that all colours put together produces white. It has since been argued that if you watch a spinning colour wheel, you will eventually see white..So then white must be a colour. White also reflects light. Unlike most colours - if you pair other colours with white ...it will reflect evenly the spectrum of all the colours with no one colour over shadowing the other. Take note of this when putting your outfit together.
So is white for every skin tone ??? Definitely not! Although there are different types of white from clear white, to off white, ivory and cream. The right colour for every one is determined by your skin tone - if it's blue based(cool) or yellow based (warm), your eye colour- if it's light or dark and your hair colour.....
Wearing the wrong colours can add years to your look, dulls skin, hair and eyes, magnify skin imperfections and make you appear heavier than you are; while wearing the right colours makes your eye sparkle, give your skin a healthy flawless appearance, makes you look younger and increase self confidence. White is not an easy colour to pull off....while wearing white, think contrast .... The fairer you are the easier it is to pull pure white top to bottom, the darker skinned are most suited to Cream, or white mixed with black or other colours in their palette. Ebony Skin is most suited to Ivory.
White is at its best with all skin tones if it is worn with accessories such as scarves or jewellery closer to the face in the colour most suited to your skin tone. Since white reflects light, the tones of the colour will reflect on your face making you achieve a flawless look as explained above. So do not shy away from white if it is not in your palette, simply choose a style such as strapless or deep v that keeps it far away from your face and accessorise it in your most flattering colours....
On a final note, silver is to white as bees are to honey. It's no wonder every bride looks totally amazing on their wedding day.
To achieve a classic look ... Pairing white with silver accessories is divine.... Also combining white with other neutral colours such as black, grey, charcoal, nude or brown is classic and guarantees a great professional look. Having said that, White is a neutral colour and will go with any colour.
I never sign off without sharing some lovely pieces on the high street with you. One of my clients had asked me to source white dresses for an upcoming party... so I decided to publish most of my findings on the blog.... Just like the little black dress, the little white dress is fast turning into a wardrobe staple. The trends are mostly lace, asymmetrical, embroidery, body skimming, folds, shapes and drapes....
